Landscape architects to take over Garema Place
From Saturday 22 October, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects is hosting the #backyardexperiment - a filmed pop-up event which aims to observe human life.
The space is going to be completely transformed. Those drab grey tiles will soon be painted every shade of the rainbow. The trees are going to be yarn-bombed with different coloured wool (thanks to community knitters). Pop-up coffee and gelato stands will also be there for the duration of the experiment. Plus, there will be moveable chairs and furniture for people to use however they want and, at night, the area will be lit up so that it’s accessible 24/7.
But it’s not all fun and games, the #backyardexperiment is actually a filmed social study.
Cameras will be installed to monitor the area, all day every day throughout the experiment. It aims to answer questions surrounding how the public react to and interact with moveable furniture. Will people move the chairs to come together and chat or will they go missing after a day? The time-lapse video will provide this insight and show how can we change public spaces to bring out the best in our city and its people.
The #backyardexperiment will trigger thinking into how the space is used now and reflect on how the installation may change the public environment for the benefit of Canberrans.
It’s going to be a fun and innovative use of the space and we want to see Canberrans down there, interacting and using the space in the way they want! This is an opportunity to influence the public environment.
#backyardexperiment runs from Saturday 22 October until Sunday 30 October and is a part of Not In My Backyard – the 2016 International Conference of Landscape Architecture
