Want to be better prepared when navigating complex IP ownership scenarios?

This full-day workshop, for ANU Professional Staff, will help you recognise and solve controversies in the ownership of intellectual property, for example, in industry funded research and collaborative research, with special attention to the adverse implications of joint ownership.

Examples of topics covered in this workshop include:

  • Joint ownership of IP and its unexpected commercial implications
  • Rights of first refusal and options to negotiate a license
  • Ownership of IP in collaborative relationships and strategic alliances
  • Ownership of IP between a university and a company
  • Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.

Who should attend

This workshop is strictly for ANU professional staff who may need to navigate intellectual property in their roles, e.g. Legal, Contracts, BDMs, Research Managers, Innovation ANU, etc. The workshop is free to attend (all workshop costs will be covered by Innovation ANU), but spaces are strictly limited.

About the facilitator

The workshop will be facilitated by Philip Mendes. Philip is passionate about innovation, intellectual property, and its management and commercialisation, both at a policy level, as well as at the implementation level.

He practised as a lawyer for 32 years, most of which practising as a technology transactions lawyer. During that time, he was also engaged as a consultant to universities, government, and companies, advising on innovation policy, intellectual property polices, technology transfer best practice, and commercialisation improvement.

His experience includes, but is not limited to:

  • being appointed by the Australian Government to its Advisory Council on Intellectual Property
  • representing 18 Australian and foreign universities, as well as research institutes, numerous start up companies, venture capital firms, SMEs, publicly listed companies, multinational companies, and Australian and foreign governments, in relation to their technology transactions.
  • leading or being a member of the transactions teams negotiating numerous global IP licenses, strategic alliances, joint ventures, collaborations, and IP mergers and acquisitions, across all technology sectors including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical devices, ICT, materials and chemical engineering, etc.
  • representing over 80 start up companies in relation to their angel and venture capital fund-raising, with funds located in Australia, United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
  • negotiating technology transactions with parties in over 25 countries, from large multi-national companies, to small companies, and with government parties.

These days, Philip concentrates on continuing his policy related advisory work, and skills development training in the technology transactions field. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology, where he lectures on the Management and Commercialisation of IP.
