Get your business involved with light rail

In late August, The Canberra Business Chamber, in conjunction with Capital Metro, released information for businesses looking to take offer products and services related to the rollout of light rail in Canberra.

There are over 75 packages available with a value of around $75 million. The good news for local business is that there are plenty of industries included, with need for services such as maintenance, printing, facilities support and earthworks.

While much of the major works are being managed by multinationals with experience in building light rail infrastructure and rolling stock, there is a strong focus on working with local suppliers to ensure that Canberra businesses can realise some of the benefits of the project’s investment. The Canberra business Chamber is right at the centre of this roll-out.

The initial list is available in the last pages of the Chamber’s document here. The list will change over the life of the project and will be updated as necessary and posted on the Canberra Business Chamber website.

Capital Metro will begin issuing these packages next month. The base document is worth reading not just for the opportunities it presents for local business, but as part of what is looking to be a key issue in the upcoming ACT election.

It’s a pretty binary outcome for light rail in Canberra: if the Labor Party is returned on October 15, the project will proceed. If the Liberals manage to wrest power for the first time in 15 years, then the tram will be quickly moved to the junk heap.
