Modern quilting professional, Denyse Schmidt is set to join Canberra's most inspiring quilting event of 2017, on Wednesday 13 September.

Known as one of the leading quilters of the 21st Century, fibre artist Denyse Schmidt has been sewing since her mother taught her as a young girl. She is a former graphic designer and graduate from Rhode Island School of Design. The Creative Retreat is bringing her to Canberra for a one-night-only, must-attend event.

The Creative Retreat founder Jules McMahon said the event will be a captivating evening, with guests learning about Denyse's modernist approach to traditional patchwork. This includes her creative, imaginative and resourceful approach and the journey she has taken to becoming a world-renowned quilt maker and fabric designer.

“Denyse will sign copies of her book, there’ll be a pop-up shop and guests will mingle with like-minded creatives to be inspired by each other,” says Jules.

“I started The Creative Retreat to build a community of makers and provide a relaxing and inspiring environment where creative pursuits can be encouraged and shared free from the pressures of everyday life. As a hands-on creative, I believe our artistic outlets allow us to better ourselves and increase our passion for life. The Creative Retreat provides a welcoming space, to learn, to make and to share your joy with others.”

Jules will facilitate the creative meet-up with international quilting super star Denyse in the gorgeous surrounds of the historic Ainslie Arts Centre. There will be a display of modern quilts and attendees of the event will also be treated delicious refreshments.  This is a great opportunity for those with an interest in design, textiles and the handmade movement to come together.
