Nipuni Wijewickrema has taken out first place for her innovative business idea, GG’s Flowers, after pitching against four other ACT finalists at tonight’s Australia Post Regional Pitchfest territory final at the National Convention Centre.

Presenting meaningful employment for people with special needs, Ms Wijewickrema was awarded the $5,000 first prize, and the opportunity to represent the ACT in August at the national final gala event in Wagga Wagga (NSW).

Ms Wijewickrema was also awarded the Community Choice Award, which was voted for by the audience on the night and will take home an additional $1,500.

“I’m thrilled to have won the ACT final for Australia Post Regional Pitchfest,” said Ms Wijewickrema.

“This has been such an incredible opportunity, not just to build momentum for my business but to meet fantastic new contacts, shine a light on social enterprise, and gain practical experience to keep my business moving forward.”

Coming second place and winning $3,500 was Sebastian Harrison with OzGuild, a mobile program for digitising, organising and trading cards for Magic: The Gathering.

Rebecca Burrows, Australia Post’s General Manager Small Business and panel judge, said the calibre of entries was exceptional and great examples of how regional entrepreneurs are making the most of eCommerce opportunities.

“We were pitched five smart, forward-thinking and innovative business ideas that demonstrated commercial potential to meet a real, practical need,” said Ms Burrows.

“Nipuni’s pitch was confident, creative and a fantastic reflection of what people from regional areas can accomplish when given the opportunity. I think we’ve attracted some outstanding examples of regional innovation, and I can’t wait to see all of our winners pitch their ideas at the national final in August.”

Ms Burrows was joined on the judging panel by Jane Cay, Founder birdsnest; Julie Okley, Founder and CEO Dilkara Essence of Australia; Rohan Workman, Director MAP at the University of Melbourne; and Mitchell Harmer, CEO SignOnSite.

The Australia Post Regional Pitchfest national final gala event will be held on Friday 18 August in Wagga Wagga (NSW). The winner of the national event will be awarded $7,500 plus a MAP Silicon Valley Trip to the U.S. and an Australia Post eCommerce Business Growth Pack. The runner up will receive $5,000 and the Community Choice Award winner $3,000.
